This year’s ANDA Perth Money Expo special coin release features a privy mark in tribute to Australia’s square Kookaburra penny design struck 100 years ago.
While the iconic Australian bird has been featured on coins struck by The Perth Mint since 1990, its representation first appeared on Australian coins in 1919. The Commonwealth Government struck a series of square kookaburra ‘patterns’ between 1919 and 1921 to test the concept. Although they were never officially distributed, they remain an important part of Australian numismatic history and the inspiration behind years of creative kookaburra coin designs.

Kookaburra Design with Privy Mark

The coin’s reverse portrays a kookaburra perched on a branch at sunset. The branch is partially submerged in a river, which is lined with wetland grasses and a sprouting tree. The design also includes the inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA’, the 2019 year-date, the weight and fineness, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. A square privy mark depicts the historic kookaburra pattern, including the words ‘AUSTRALIA’ and ‘ONE PENNY’.

Perth Money Expo Packaging

The coin is presented in a coloured presentation card which includes the ANDA logo and incorporates a fold-out stand for upright display.
